Advances in Social Welfare in Hong Kong

Daniel T. L. Shek, Lam Mong Chow, Au Chor Fai, J. J. Lee
The Chinese University Press

In the new millennium, we are confronted with rapid changes in the social welfare field, including the changing subvention mode, greater emphasis on service quality and accountability, and the rising complexity of needs of different client groups. Colleagues in the social welfare field need to adjust and respond to these changes.

This volume is a response to the above-mentioned challenges. It is a collection of papers presented at the Symposium entitled “Entering a New Millennium: Advances in Social Welfare in Hong Kong (邁進新世紀:香港社會福利的新發展)” commemorating the 50th Anniversary of New Asia College. Six of the papers are written in English, twelve in Chinese.

The unique feature of this book is that papers on BOTH social welfare services and research are included. There are papers on social welfare services in the new millennium, including family, youth, elderly, and rehabilitation services, social security, social welfare administration, and evaluation of social work practice. At the same time, papers documenting the latest research covering youth, family, elderly, self-help groups and supervision are also included.

Daniel T. L. Shek (PhD, BBS, JP) is Professor in the Department of Social Work, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a Consulting Editor of Journal of Clinical Psychology and member of the Editorial Boards of Research on Social Work Practice, International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health, Asian Journal of Counseling and Journal of Youth Studies. He is member of the Action Committee Against Narcotics, Youth Commission, Fight Crime Committee, and Independent Police Complaints Council of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He has to date published more than 100 articles in international refereed journals.
